Michael Tighe, a well-known National Hunt jockey, was one of five passengers travelling in a Rolls-Royce from Worthing to Gatwick racecourse where he was to ride Ibstock in the Pegasus Steeplechase. On the main London Road, between Crawley and Horley, a Sunbeam car pulled up suddenly in front of the Rolls which ran into it.

Tighe was either thrown out or he attempted to leap out: somehow his head was caught by the roof of the Rolls-Royce and he was killed. He was 38.
