Arthur Templeman

1886 - 1938


Arthur Spurr Templeman was born at Spalding, Lincolnshire, July 29, 1886, and was apprenticed to William Grey & John Hallick.

He had his first ride in public on Gardener's Garter at Derby on November 15, 1901.

It was not until some four years later that he rode his first winner: Frigid, at Lingfield, May 6, 1905.

His last winner was Silver Thrush at Ripon on May 9, 1914.

Arthur's last ever ride came on New York at Windsor on November 6, 1914.

He was the champion apprentice in 1906 with 55 winners and he rode 232 winners in all.

He went to India to ride and later took up training there. He also rode one winner in Ireland.

His brothers Fred & Clark (1885-1953) were also jockeys.

Their father William (c1858-1914) went bankrupt in 1898.

Arthur died at Twickenham on April 23, 1938. He left £307.

His biggest wins include the 1905 Cambridgeshire (Velocity), 1906 Chester Cup (Feather Bed), 1906 Victoria Cup (Catapult) and the 1905 Derby Cup (Catscradle).
