Although George Titterton did have some rides on the Flat at the end of the 19th century, it was over jumps that he had each of his four wins, all of them at the same Welsh venue.
Born around 1873, his first success came at Cardiff on May 22, 1899, when Jephtha’s Daughter won the Penllyn Selling Hurdle. The four-year-old had won her previous start at Stratford in April when ridden by her owner Mr R. Earle. It was the only occasion on which George got to ride the filly as she was sold to Germany shortly afterwards.
His second win was also gained at Cardiff, when Full Hackle beat Praise by half a length to land the Canton Maiden Hurdle on November 1. It was Full Hackle’s debut over jumps and he provided George with his third win when scoring again at Cardiff, this time in the Llandaff Chase on Easter Monday, April 16, 1900 by a length and a half.
Eight days later George found himself in trouble with the stewards at the Glamorgan Hunt fixture at Cowbridge when, having finished last of two in the Penllyn Open Chase on Rhondda, he was disqualified for having jumped a fence on the wrong side of a flag. He was “severely reprimanded and cautioned for continuing in the race.”
However, back at his happy hunting ground of Cardiff on December 27, he had his fourth, and final, win when Cloven Foot proved too good for his five rivals, winning the Cymric Hurdle by two lengths. It was the three-year-old’s first start over jumps, and he was also George’s final ride when failing to complete the course in the Bromfield Hurdle at Ludlow on March 5, 1901.
