Gerard Tumelty

Jump jockey Gerard Tumelty was born in Downpatrick, Northern Ireland on March 21, 1985. He rode exactly 100 winners during a 10-year career in Britain, much of which was based with Barbury Castle trainer Alan King.

He was not afraid to travel far and wide. In September 2013 he rode at Partynice Racecourse in Wroclaw, Poland, finishing fifth in Wielka Partynicka Hurdle. He rode a Czech runner in the following day’s Wielka Wroclawska – Poland’s equivalent of the Czech Republic’s Velka Pardubicka and part of the Crystal Cup series – but parted company early at the Irish bank.

He also rode regularly in Scandinavia and did particularly well there. In October 2015 he scored a notable success when riding Monfalcone to success in the King’s Cup at Taby Racecourse in Sweden. The King’s Cup is second only to the Grand National in Sweden in terms of its profile. Gerard was winning the race for the second time. He struck up a successful relationship with Monfalcone. The pair recorded nine victories together, including the Norwegian Champion Hurdle as well as finishing third in the Swedish Grand National.

In the latter years of his career, Gerard became heavily involved in operations at Apple Tree Stud alongside friend and racing colleague Robert ‘Choc’ Thornton. Gerard and his girlfriend Sarah Welford did most of the breaking and pre-training. He also had the job of transporting Tony McCoy up and down the country to meetings prior to his retirement.

Gerard secured his 100th domestic success when riding the Noel Williams-trained Puttara to victory at Huntingdon on August 31, 2015. That was to be his last visit to the winner’s enclosure.

He had his final ride on Cannford Chimes for Alan King at Exeter March 21, 2017, finishing second. After the race, he was hoisted high and given a rousing send-off by his weighing-room colleagues.
