On Monday 3rd December 1990, Kelso Racecourse staged two races (on a 7-race card) in which Russian, English & Scottish riders competed for points and the winning jockey won a bottle of whiskey. It wasn't much of a success as one race had 7 runners and the other only 3 went to post.

The first race was a hurdle won by the Russian jockey Magomed Tokov on the Jonjo O'Neil trained Macho Man, above.

Magomed then rode the Arthur Stephenson trained Tasar (the grey) to finish second to Tartan Takeover in the 3-runner chase. The photo shows him jumping the open ditch with his whip in his mouth. I wonder what Arthur thought about that?

"His mount in the steeplechase, the grey Tasar, took a fierce hold. Magomed clenched his whip between his teeth while clutching the reins with both hands as tightly as he could. When questioned afterwards by the stewards about the placement of his whip, the rider, who did not speak English, indicated that he only had a choice of two places he could stick it and, on reflection, his mouth seemed the better option. He may have expressed his views via an interpreter, although he might not actually have needed one."
