Robert Thomas

1848 - 1887

Robert Thomas, born in Manchester, was still a stable lad when he rode Lord Lyon to win the 1866 2,000 Guineas. That year, he also won the Queen's Vase on Elland.

A bad accident the following season left him with a shortened leg and prematurely ended his career, and he turned to training.

Unexpectedly, he died at Moreton-in-Marsh on April 30, 1887. He was 39. He left a wife and five children destitute, and a fund was set up for them.
