Having ridden four winners on the Flat in the early 1930s, Patrick Stephen Treacy added a couple more under National Hunt rules some eight years apart.
Born in 1914, he was apprenticed to Martin Hartigan and had his first ride when ninth of ten runners (one of which was left and took no part) on Sunbather in the Apprentice Plate at Newmarket on April 28, 1931.
On June 24, 1932, he travelled to Haydock Park for two rides and won on both of them, albeit with the help of the Haydock stewards. In the first race of the afternoon, his mount So-far, trained by Martin Hartigan, edged out Leicester Lane, ridden by ‘Rufus’ Beasley to land the Flixton High-weight Handicap by a head. In the last race on the card, the Lowton Apprentices’ Stakes, he finished second on Alma Joan, beaten three lengths by Harry Stamp on Forum II, but the winner was disqualified for carrying an incorrect weight.
Pat returned to Haydock on August 11 and won another race on Alma Joan, the Garswood High-weight Handicap, scoring by four lengths. He had his final win on the Flat when Manchuria beat five rivals to take the Glynde Selling Handicap at Lewes on August 4, 1933.
He continued to have a few rides on the Flat, holding a licence until 1939, but he also began riding over jumps, making his debut at Lingfield Park on February 13, 1937, when Fair Toll was unplaced in the Trespasser Handicap Hurdle. Just over a year later he had his first win when Saxford finished second in the Sandown Open Handicap Hurdle at Sandown Park’s Grand Military meeting on March 18. Pat objected to the winner, Young Hawk, on grounds of ‘boring’ and this was sustained.
He kept the mount on Saxford but after pulling him up at Sandown Park on December 10, 1938, he did ride again until November 1945. He had his last win at the Beaufort Hunt meeting on April 13, 1946, when Orderly triumphed in the Sherston Handicap Chase, beating Bryan Marshall on Beleaguered by a length and a half.
The pair were second at Wincanton nine days later, but a fall at Plumpton on Orderly in the Newhaven Handicap Chase on May 18 was Pat’s final ride. It is not known whether that fall resulted in a premature end to his career in the saddle.
Pat Treacy died in 1995.
