Paul Tulk

The son of jockey Fred Tulk (1908-1984) Paul Frederick Tulk was born at 21a, Duchess Drive, Newmarket on October 24, 1938 and was apprenticed to Sam Armstrong from December 13, 1953 to 1959. Sam retired in 1972 and his son Robert took over.

Paul rode his first winner on Coquet Light 10/1 at Worcester on 18 June 1955 and his best season, numerically, came in 1967 with 30 winners.

He won the Cesarewitch in 1955 on that grand stayer, Curry, and also won the Nunthorpe stakes on Ennis.

He was retained by owner Robin McAlpine for 12 years before becoming a freelance in 1970. He spent some time in the Far East before returning to Britain in 1976.

On November 13, 1961, he married Gillian Margaret Taylor; she gave him a son, Simon Paul.

Paul, a golfing enthusiast, named Newbury as his favourite racecourse.
