After riding one winner as an amateur, John Gerard Twomey turned conditional and rattled up 18 victories in less than 15 months, then, after a gap of two years, added another two to his score.
His first success was at Huntingdon on Easter Monday, April 16, 1990, when The Fax Man, trained by Barney Curley, beat ten rivals in the Levy Board N.H. Flat Race.
John rode as a conditional for Curley but also won races for other Newmarket trainers, notably Neville Callaghan, for whom he had his most important success when Royal Derbi, the first good horse owned by Michael Tabor, landed the valuable Ekbalco Hurdle at Newcastle in November 1991.
Having ridden 11 winners in the 1991/92 campaign, including a double at Fakenham, nearly two years elapsed before his final two victories. The second of those was on Spanish Whisper, on whom he had already won four races, in the Nicholas Nickleby Handicap Hurdle on the all-weather at Southwell on January19, 1994, shortly before all-weather hurdle races were discontinued following a spate of injuries to horses. Spanish Whisper won by a length from Richard Dunwoody’s mount Secret Liaison.
