Our goal in Dergons is not to make designers abide strictly by arbitrary marking rules, but to provide our markings as a framework to make designs you enjoy.
To that end, many rules and guides are malleable with the Rule Of Cool- if bending a marking rule makes your design better, go for it! As long as you’re not vastly changing a marking or specifically doing something the guide says not to do, chances are, something outside the box will be acceptable.
Your base color and markings can be picked from your available color swatches, but you may also desaturate the colors to a large degree. Color swatches generally represent the range of Hue and Value, and the maximum Saturation, that a particular base may use!
Markings may share colors with each other, but should be somewhat distinct from the base color unless they are on top of a much more distinct marking. (For example, Scalemarks on top of a dark Sable may be the exact same as the base color, appearing to ‘fade’ into the base using Sable’s gradient.)
Marking shapes are allowed to flow into and mimic each other! As examples, you may make Stripes thicker and Tabby thinner where they meet on the same dergon, and you may disperse Bloom into smaller spots than usual to combine more smoothly with Spotting. Unless a guide specifically prohibits one marking looking like another, tricks such as a pale Unders combining with Hood or Splash to make a faux Piebald are acceptable!
Ranges are the general area a marking may appear in, and may be slightly out of range to follow anatomy or connect with another marking. For most markings, the minimum on a range does not have to be filled; the marking just has to occupy roughly that amount of space somewhere in the range!
If you look at the Genotype field of a geno or import, you can see that Dergon genes are marked with up to four copies of a marking! More copies in their genotype generally means an easier time passing the marking to offspring, as well as increased range and color options while designing.
Heterozygous (Het) means the dergon has ONE copy of the gene, appearing like so: /Msk
Homozygous (Hom) means the dergon has TWO copies of the gene: /MskMsk
Super means the dergon has THREE or FOUR copies of the gene: /MskMskMsk OR /MskMskMskMsk
Modifier genes, base color genes, and genetic color mutations do not have a Super form!
You can find the fullsizes of sliders and ranges by clicking on them!
Common Markings have a normal passrate of 50% when Het.
Uncommon Markings have a normal passrate of 40% when Het.
Unusual Markings have a normal passrate of 30% when Het.
Rare Markings have a normal passrate of 30% when Het.
Modifier genes have a normal passrate of 40% when Het.
These guides are displayed on Blanket. Modifiers do not create a marking on their own!
