A dergon's base color generally indicates the range of colors allowed for markings, and almost all markings (except those which pull from specific sliders, like White and Black markings) can use the dergon's base slider freely. The White, Off-white, Black, and Off-black sliders are also available to pull from, even if a marking isn't restricted to them. Most markings can also use the Natural Colors Slider:
The goal of this slider is not to limit you to what's on the image. This is meant to represent the maximum saturation, and minimum value (no pure blacks!) that most markings can use. Use it as a guide, not a rule! You can desaturate, go above the slider, and gently push saturation near the top and bottom to get colors that work better with your dergon.
Markings may be pure white, but may never be pure black! Markings generally should not get below a value of ~10 at the lowest. The Black slider lower down shows the very darkest allowable shades.
("Natural or Base slider color", as listed on most markings, generally refers to the slider above, or the full height Vibrant slider for color families. The other sliders in this section are also available to be used- don't be scared by Chalk, Stone, Onyx, and White/Black not being listed out individually everywhere!)
Chalk, Stone, and Onyx sliders are also available to be used! These are the colors a dergon may always use, and almost all markings can pull from them.
Additionally, a dergon can use both their base slider for markings, and if Vibrant, the sliders for all three bases in their color family. For example, a Rain dergon can have markings pulled from the Mist and Ocean sliders! For convenience, the full height vibrant color family sliders are here:
When a marking as listed as needing to be lighter or darker than the base color, this is referring to your chosen specific color. Your chosen marking color should be compared to the Value of your base (when using HSV/HSL sliders), or if you can't check, should at least appear darker or lighter than your base. Your marking does not generally need to have the same Hue OR Saturation as your base! The Value can, as well, be equal to the base's, as long as it's somewhat distinct in Hue or Saturation, or is on top of another marking which lets it stand out.
Some markings must be specific colors, especially white, black, off-white, or off-black. The swatches for these are below.
Several markings have access to a different array of colors. Oxidize, for instance, can mimic metal oxidation or patina, and is not strictly limited to a slider, as real life examples are the main reference.
Arcane and Radioactive markings as well have their own set of colors- pink-purple for Arcane markings' magical effects, and green-blue for Radioactive markings' ionizing influence.
Ash and Oxidize's sliders are below, for reference; Oxidize is not strictly limited to these!
