Dergons are a fantastic species, resembling about 60% of a dragon. They usually have a singular leg, which they hop around on (somewhat wobbly), a single main wing, which spins around their torso like a propeller (don't ask how), and a single back wing jutting from their hip which, allegedy, provides stabilization for their flight. Some dergons have various limb arrangements, but they never have symmetrical pairs of limbs. About half the population sports long, gently curving horns, and different breeds show different arrangements of display fins and crests around the face and neck.
Dergons are mainly carnivorous, though thrive best on an opportunistically omnivorous diet. They're extremely resistant to ingested toxins, and some populations have been shown to play a similar ecological role as vultures. More often, however, they simply take advantage of their hardiness to steal lunch from other sapient creatures.
And, despite appearances, dergons are indeed sapient. Fully capable of speech and reasoning (though this last ability varies between individuals), dergons are mostly treated as members of the societies they cohabitate with.
Dergon intelligence varies greatly. Widely considered to be various shades of silly, unserious, and outright stupid, dergons tend to prioritize the fun in life, and rarely reign in unwise impulses. Even the smartest dergon has eaten a rock or two in their time. Dergons can certainly be intelligent, and are welcome in learning institutions when they have the inclination to apply themselves. More commonly, a dergon will simply make friends with a creature willing to use their brain, guiding the two through the practicalities of life while the dergon causes trouble and wanders off. (Picture any comic or meme featuring a pet given the power of speech; this is the vibe of dergons' average intelligence!)
This friendliness tends to let dergons easily group together (a flight is the term for a group of dergons), and makes them loyal friends and steeds. Dergon-riding is generally respected across the continent, as the power of flight makes communication and item delivery much easier in a mainly pre-industrial world. Dergons don't mind being ridden, as they tend to simply enjoy flying around, and being given a real destination makes little difference. They have a surprisingly high carrying capacity, especially larger breeds, and have been known to be able to work together for larger crates and aircraft. Dergons benefit from having riders as well- humanoids who have hands and opposable thumbs are a boon to creatures with one leg, a mouth, and, if they're lucky, two wing-thumbs. Even the most dextrously-winged dergon will be grateful for a pair of helping hands sometimes.
Your average, everyday dergon. Flapflaps are native to the interiors of the continent, preferring to roost in high altitude mountains and among the tallest buildings they can fall off of. Flapflaps don't generally manage well in high winds, and are easily lost enough to end up almost everywhere on the map.
Flapflaps are reliable
With Nyoomers having an extra wing, these little speedsters are more suited to rough weather, and happily make their home in the marine winds of the Floating Isles. These dergons are smarter than most, though that isn't saying much, and nyoomers tend to be favored as teammates to scouts, mail services, and other jobs that require focus.
Originally popping up where Nyoomers and Flapflaps met at the edge of the Floating Isles, Fancybutts have since established themselves as a subtype of their own, preferring to move to cities where they can be as much of a nuisance as possible. Fancybutts are generally patient, gentle giants, and are often willing to help with transportation in exchange for shiny trinkets.
