Synopsis: Three delinquents are chosen to fight a monster from the Greek mythology.
In a small town filled with sanctimonious talk from the elders and picture perfect children, being different is a fatality. Avery, Levi and Austin don't fit the mould. They are considered delinquents and nobody even tries to understand them, they are ignored by adults, picked on by children and preached at by the elders.
Avery tries to forget her life by reading, Levi plays his rock music loudly to provoke people to yell at him and Austin puts up his paintings in different places in town. The kids aren't exactly what we would call delinquents, but this behaviour is considered unacceptable.
When a monster from the Greek mythology threatened the town, it was obvious who would be sent to deal with the monster - the only three people who didn't sew, weren't studious, were focused in arts (which is a calamity because it makes people think about things that mess with the rules of their community) and didn't do farm work, so if they died, it wouldn't be a loss. Their parents protested, they didn't care that their children weren't like the rest, they were still proud of them and that's why they bought them books, musical instruments and art supplies, but it was all in vain, the elders had agreed - the three would face the monster.
And like that the three delinquents hugged their parents and marched down to where the monster was hiding, trying to gather power to attack the town. They walked through the picture perfect spring gardens, ready to face whatever was out there, it couldn't be worse than the people in this messed up town.
Avery said a quick prayer in her mind to God, for He'd never left her and she was sure He wouldn't leave her now. She was confident she'd see her parents again. Austin was appreciating the beauty of the landscape and promised himself he'd paint this scenery if he'd made it out alive and Levi was holding on strong to his electric guitar. What annoyed him most was the way they were treated. He decided that how much would that monster try to hurt them, it was still not as much as a monster as the people in that town, he couldn't wait until he finally got out of that cage and shared his music with the world.
Then they arrived at the outskirts of town where the monster hid.
A minotaur awaited.
The upperpart of it's body was of a bull and the rest was a man's.
"A minotaur." Avery murmured.
"Okay, smart girl, how do we defeat this thing?" Levi asked, keeping his voice low as the beast had not yet seen them.
"In the myth, Theseus stabbed the soft place under the Minotaur's arm. But we don't have a weapon."
"I've got a paint brush... I could sharpen it. One of us distracts the beast, another creeps up on it and stabs it and the third runs up to it and punches it or hits it with something so we make sure it's dead?" Austin suggested.
"That is a great idea, Austin!" Avery said.
"Let's do it. I'll hit it with my guitar. Austin can distract it, because in case someone gets hurt, it shouldn't be a girl, so Avery can stab it."
"Why do I have to be the distraction?"
"Because you-"
"Stop it!" Avery scolded, "Let's sharpen that brush and then do what Levi said."
They sharpened the brush and Austin ran next to the minotaur and yelled: "Hey, minotaur! Has anyone ever told you that you smell like bull?"
"He is horrible at trash-talking." Levi stated.
"At least he's trying. Oh, here goes nothing!"
The girl crept behind the minotaur who ran towards the boy, Austin managed to corner the beast in between three trees and the girl managed to stab it before it could leave.
The minotaur roared in pain and it's screams broke Austin's heart as he opened his mouth to tell the other two to stop hurting the creature, Levi hit it with his electric guitar three times with all the force the boy had. Soon, the beast stopped breathing.
"We're no better than them." Austin uttered. "We have taken the life of a thing that hadn't even hurt us, because some people we hate told us to."
The other two looked at him and after the boy's words sunk in they felt shame, but Avery still tried to justify "We had to! It was a monster, sooner or later it would've hurt someone!"
"But it was just as trapped and uncommon as we are." Levi added, understanding that what they'd done was wrong.
"And all that sanctimonious talk was, as we already know, only in their favour. The blood is on our hands."
They sighed, nothing could be done now, so they dragged the body of the lifeless monster to the town and swore they would not do what the people in that wasteland would tell them ever again. That they'd get out and spread kindness and hope and follow their dreams.
Avery now only read books about margialised groups of people, Austin's paintings showcased the injustices and horrors in the world and Levi wrote songs about them. Who would have ever thought that a monster's death could give birth to three activists who decided to stop closing their eyes to the bad parts of the world?
