Synopsis: Ben and Haylee go to what seems like a fun party at their new friend's house, only to find out it is a trap and they can't go home.
Trigger warning: mentions of death and violence
"Alright, class, today we are going to welcome a new student - Anne Evans." Mr. Brown announced.
A mysterious girl entered the classroom, a typical emo girl - short hair dyed red, black leather jacket, ripped jeans, emo make up. I didn't think much of her. Mr. Brown told her to sit next to me, so I smiled and said "Hello! I'm Haylee." She shook my hand and took out a pen and her notebook. I could see my friend Ben laughing with one of his friends, Jack. I rolled my eyes and opened my notebook. The remaining time of the class went on as usual.
After Mr. Brown yelled "Dismissed!", Ben came, as usual, to my desk and asked if I'd done my math's homework, to which I replied "Yes, but this is honestly the last time I'm letting you copy it!", he smiled and said "You say that every time. Yet you never do it."
I forgot that Anne Evans was still there until she started laughing.
"Me, I'd never let my boyfriend copy my homework, but you do you." she said.
This was awkward. It was weird to see people think me and Ben were dating. It was like saying two siblings were dating.
I said shyly: "Oh, I'd never go out with a boy like him. We're just friends." I handed Ben my notebook and asked while he was leaving "So, what are you doing after school?"
"Nothing much. Football practice for 2 hours, then I'm free. What do you want to do?"
"That's the thing, I don't have anything to do. I was hoping you had something to do, so I could tag along."
He came back and whispered: "You could come to practice, that is if you can handle talking to James without running away."
I could feel the blood rushing to my cheeks. I'd never tell him anything ever again.
"I think I'll pass."
"If you don't have anything to do, you can come to my house. I'm throwing a party, so maybe I can make some friends. It's 583 Harbour Street. You can come after his football practice."
I was skeptical of going but Ben said that it sounded good and that we'd be there.
After class I went with him to his football practice and asked him:
"You seriously think we should go to some stranger's house?"
"Oh, c'mon! She's new here and just wants to make some friends. And weren't you going on about how bored you are?"
"I guess... but we don't know her... what if it isn't safe?"
"Oh, live a little! Why wouldn't it be safe?"
I wanted to reply, but just then Anne Evans came running in.
"I wanted to tell you that my parents don't let me throw a party. Sorry."
I acted cool, but I was so relieved. She left before we could say anything.
The next two hours I watched Ben's football practice. I must admit, I got bored. They only sport I enjoy watching is hockey. We hung out with Anne Evans anyway, at the cafe in town. I found out she was actually nice. We also met another girl there, Hannah Grace. She went to Elizabeth High and she, too, invited us to a party. I was skeptical once again, but Ben agreed before I could object. As he always does.
She seemed nice, but something was off about her, Anne agreed.
I understood why Anne would throw a party after meeting us, so we could bring other people and she'd have friends, but Hannah Grace... I didn't get it. Her story didn't make sense to me. I thought about it on the way home, but didn't say anything until after Ben left.
"Hannah Grace's backstory makes no sense to me." I said.
"I agree. She said she didn't come to the cafe because she lived far away from it, but then when she left she said that she only lived down the block." Anne stated.
"But why would she invite three complete starngers to her party. That's what puzzles me most, I mean I understood that you'd just moved here, so you could meet people. But she said she lived her her whole life, she must know people, mustn't she?"
"I don't know. I'm not going."
And then we arrived at Anne's house, so I was left alone.
I wished my parents were home so I could ask them what they thought about this situation, but they were on a trip for their 20th wedding anniversary.
The next day of school went by so fast and I could only focus on my gut feeling that we shouldn't go. I tried to tell Ben about it. He wouldn't hear it and just brush it off and tell me it was just my anxiety and that nothing would happen.
I went with him to the party.
Hannah Grace's house was down the block from the cafe. A mansion. She greeted us smiling at the door and welcomed us in. She closed the door and told us to make ourselves at home.
I was surprised that it was just me and Ben there. I apologised, deciding that we must have come too early. She started laughing and said that it was fine, we came exactly at the hour we should've come.
She asked us when our friend would be coming and she became quickly distressed after telling her she wouldn't be coming. She asked me to call someone else as "two isn't enough! It only works with three!". Now, Ben realised that we should go so he excused us and said that we really had to go.
Hannah Grace went insane. Somehow, the lights started flickering and the windows were boarded up. I thought I was going to die, but I managed not to have a panic attack, this was a life and death situation. My wits hadn't left me yet. We wouldn't be able to call for help, but luckily, Ben was popular!
"How about we post that this party is so cool? This way you will have your third person!" I suggested, trying to act cool.
"You think I'm dumb?! I know you'll call for help!" she raged.
"NO! I promise you I will not!"
She took out a knife, "Fine. But if you call for help, you're both dead."
I took a deep breath and nodded. I asked James to give me his phone. I posted: meet me at this Sick party and bring your friENDs. tHank ELlie for liking my Post. 328 Liberty Street. COME FAST!
"Done. See, I didn't call anyone."
She looked at me weirdly, took Ben's phone, made me give her my own and then asked, "Would you like to be tied to a chair or to the sofa?"
"Excuse me?" Ben asked.
"I'm asking you where you want to be tied while we wait for my boss to take you away, of course."
I panicked. I should have been more upfront in that post, just as I was about to reply, the door was knocked down by the police!
Thank God Ben's father (who is a police officer) saw his post.
They took Hannah Grace away and we found out her name is actually Elizabeth Smith and is actually 35. We were both grounded for an entire year, but we've learned our lesson. Only go to parties of people you know.
