Synopsis: A young girl discovers the joy of reading, with a little help from fictional characters.
My small town felt more hollow than usual as I was wandering the old streets by myself after a fight with my friends. I realised I had nothing to do. I was bored of staring at the TV, so I decided to go down to the old library and see what it had to offer. I hated reading, it seemed like an activity for old people, but I was desperately bored and I did not want to apologise to my friends when it was not my fault. So, I entered the library. I was overwhelmed by the amount of books. A dozen of two meters tall bookshelves were filled with books. Some looked like they'd just been bought and others looked like they'd sat on those bookshelves since the beginning of time.
"Good evening!" I said to the librarian who asked me if she could help me. I nodded and she handed me a book covered in red leather, "The Happily Ever After". I wanted to laugh as it looked as if it was a fairy tale book, but decided I should be polite and said "Thank you."
I went to a desk and began reading. It was quite boring and I was wondering how could some people do this for fun. I took the book home and read some more before falling asleep so I could finish it faster, I was so tired of it, but I wanted to say that I'd finished a book.
As I was complaining in my mind about how boring this book was, something made me lose my balance and I fell head-first through the pages of the book.
I found myself in the golden castle in the story with the main character from the fairy tale - Queen Summer.
She looked spectacular surrounded by all her riches. Her golden locks and pale blue dress made her look simple but at the same time powerful.
"Welcome, Jessica. I'd not wanted to bring you here, but your indifference has bothered me too much." her voice rang across the golden corridor.
I wanted to reply but as I tried to speak, no words came out.
In an instant, I found myself in different periods - Ancient Greece, Ancient Egypt, The Roman Empire, the discovery of the New World, the American Civil War and, at last, in our era.
All these periods shifted before my eyes as Queen Summer said, "Books and reading, they are a gift. They shan't be seen as a duty but as a pleasure. Stories have existed since humans have, and books keep them written, so they are never forgotten, so a piece of the author and culture stays alive, no matter how much time has passed."
Then, I awoke and started to treasure books and reading. Since then reading has become one of my passions.
