behind bars - part 7
read first:
"Adam, I..." she stops, and then looks at me, pondering if she should continue, she shakes her head, takes a deep breath in, and continues "I just don't want to get my heart broken. Think about it, we are from two completely different worlds."
And I think the world has stopped spinning, or at least it did for me. What she says is completely true. She is objectively right.
Objectively, everything I've done so far just proves her right. It proves that I would either purposefully break her heart, or that we would eventually grow apart because we wouldn't understand each other. I don't know how to be normal.
And damn, I'm so bloody stupid. Throwing rose petals out of a helicopter? This further proves her right. This is real life, Adam, not a stupid rom-com.
Objectively, she is right. Objectively.
Subjectively, she couldn't be farther from the truth. I am not some stuck-up EGOT winner, although I may have come across as one. But it was just self defense! Walls I put up... Of course she doesn't know that! I didn't let her see that!
Really, any chance fate threw in my way, I destroyed it with my own two hands.
Nonetheless, it's still worth a shot. It really can't get worse from this.
"I understand where you're coming from, but I promise my intention isn't to break your heart. And yes, we may live completely different lives, but you never know. Dinner, tonight. No more stuck-up EGOT winner. Just Adam. And if you don't think it's fate, if you think that it'll go down in flames, then... I promise that I will go back to LA and never bother you ever again."
She doesn't say anything, but I see it in her face, she's considering it.
After a few minutes of standing in an awkward silence (and I'm still grateful there still aren't any people on the street), she rolls her eyes and says, "Fine. I have Uni today, I'm done at 17, so meet me there at 17 o'clock sharp. Impress me and don't be late."
Then she walks away and into the bookstore as I am left there trying to make sense of what's happening.
We are going on a date.
Somebody pinch me.
