Synopsis: A lake is rumoured to turn people into mythical creatures every full eclipse.
Hypocrisy can often be used to describe humans. We claim that we do not believe in such things as magic and mythical creatures, then avoid doing certain things because of 'bad luck'. If we truly didn't believe in such foolish things, we'd have no problem letting go of good luck charms or stopping fearing numbers.
In my town, everyone claims that they do not believe in silly things, but they go as far away as they can from the lake during a full eclipse.
The lake is rumoured to turn people into mythical creatures every full eclipse. On 4th January 2001, a man called James decided to go down by the lake on the full eclipse. Townsfolk say he hadn't been seen since, but right after the eclipse a phoenix had flown above the town and into the woods. I think that is a made up story they tell kids, so they don't go far from home during the eclipse.
"You seriously want to risk turning into a magical creature during the eclipse?" Lena asked.
I could see how concerned she was. I felt bad for her, she actually believed that the lake was enchanted!
"I'm telling you, Lena. The lake does not turn people into make-believe creatures during the eclipse!" I said, trying to knock some sense into her.
"You do whatever you want, Matthew, I will stay home."
I hated it when people called me Matthew. And my sister, out of all people, was the one who refused to call me Matt and insisted of always calling me Matthew.
"I'll tell our parents that you loved them when you get turned into a goblin."
I rolled my eyes and looked at the date: 8th April 2024. In just a few hours, I'd show these people that the lake does not turn people into mythical creatures.
I was running down to the lake as the clock was ticking. The eclipse was about to start. I jumped into the freezing water as the eclipse was starting. As the moon's shadow was sweeping above my head, the water started boiling.
"I screwed up." I thought as I tried to get out of the water, but I couldn't.
Something was pulling me under, I tried to fight it, but it was all in vain. I was pulled under as the Moon was passing the Sun. After all it was over, I could rise above the water, I looked down as my hands and body and I let out a scream.
I was no longer myself. I had the body of a crab! I looked at my reflection in the water... My head was a tiger's.
Lena rushed down to the lake, my parents and all the other townsfolk after her.
She exclaimed:
"Matt... you're a Shachihoko!"
I was scared to approach her. I was a monster.
"Run! Until the next eclipse, run!"
So, I did. I'm waiting impatiently to see if I can turn back into a human. I'm waiting in the woods.
