The first people to live in this area were actually called the Olmec.  The people known as the Mayans came later.  They had many similarities. 

The Mayans came up with a cool ballgame that combined soccer, volleyball, and basketball. They made chocolate from a cacao bean and they also made a spicy chocolate drink that was probably pretty yummy since they had a limited diet.
