Mulan is a legend from China. The story has been handed down for many generations. The movie and the story are very similar. There are only a few differences.
Here is the legend from China: Mulan lived in a village in ancient China. One day, warriors came and posted a scroll with a list of names. China faced war and the list was of villagers that had to report to serve. Every family had to send one male to help strengthen the army.
Mulan's father was chosen. He was a retired general but much too old to go successfully fight. Since honor was so important, her father would rather go and die than refuse and bring shame to their family. Mulan did not have an older brother to take her father's place. She had a younger brother, but he was much too young. Mulan was willing to go fight, but girls were not allowed to fight in the army. Mulan thought "if only I were a boy, it would solve all our problems." She was very sad because she knew her father would die if he went to serve.
An idea grew in Mulan's mind. That day she bought a horse. The next morning she stole her father's armor and snuck away disguised as a man. She reported to duty to the military leader who had luckily never met her father.
For many years Mulan fought - some say for as long as 10 years. In all that time no one knew she was a girl. At the end of the war, Mulan was called before the emperor to receive a special award for courage. The emperor even offered her a special job that would make her rich. Instead, she asked for a good horse so she could return to her family.
Her family was so very happy to see her. She gladly turned over her military clothes and weapons to her brother. This story spread throughout China and inspired young girls. Mulan's message was that with love and courage you can accomplish anything. Mulan's story was made into a Disney movie in 1998. We will watch this movie in class before winter break.
