Writing in ancient India was called Sanskrit. It looks like decorative swirls or lines but actually stands for letters and words. It is still used today in parts of Asia but is rare. Most people today in India speak a language called Hindi which came from Sanskrit.
The religions of Hinduism and Buddhism have sacred books written in Sanskrit. It is also used in special ceremonies for Hinduism. Sanskrit was only taught to a few people and it was considered a special skill much like the other civilizations we have studied. Mostly, the rich or upper class would have learned Sanskrit in ancient India.
