The Aztecs lived in Central or Middle America in the modern day country of Mexico. Technically, this is located on the continent of North America. It was close to where the Maya people settled but it was hundreds of years after the Mayans mysteriously disappeared.
The Aztecs first roamed the area for many many years. They needed a source of water so they settled near a lake. Lake Texcoco (Tay co co) made it easier to water their crops. Later, they built a large permanent city called Tenochtitlan (te noch tee TLAHN). This city was located on an island in the center of the lake. It was a rather odd place to settle. They settled here because they thought they had received a sign from the gods. During the many years they had traveled with no permanent home they were looking for a sign. A priest had said they would receive a special sign eventually and know where to make their home.
The story goes like this: an eagle flew from the sky, perched on top of a cactus pear plant, and began eating a snake. The Aztecs thought this was the sign from their gods to live on this island in Lake Texcoco. It wasn't the best spot to build a city, but they did just that anyway.
The climate of this region was tropical or warm all year which made growing crops easy. They grew corn, squash, tomatoes, chili peppers, and flowers. This area is close to the Equator and rain forests are also common. They receive 80 inches of rain a year and have many different plants and animals.
Tenochtitlan was one of the largest cities in the world. Spanish explorers who visited this area were amazed at what the Aztecs accomplished. Today, this is near Mexico City in Mexico.
