Most people don't know how hard it is to climb a really tall mountain. It takes training, skill, supplies, and lots of money. Read the information below and fill in your flipbook.
The Himalaya Mountain range contains the tallest mountains in the world. This gigantic range is located in Asia in the small country of Nepal. It was formed millions of years ago. A piece of land broke away from Africa and bumped into Asia. Repeated movement over millions of years formed the mountains. Tectonic plate movement causes the mountains to grow a little bit each year.
Mt. Everest is 29,035 feet tall, the tallest mountain in the world. The mountain is named after Sir George Everest who led an expedition to explore Asia. His job was to explore the land for accurate maps. Nobody is sure how much he explored the mountain but that is how it got its' name.
At the summit (or top) it can be so very cold that bare skin can freeze in just seconds. The region above 24,000 feet is so dangerous that climbers call it the "Death Zone." It averages -40 F but can get as cold as -70 F. It can also be very windy which makes it feel even colder. It has been as windy as 200 mph.
Sherpas are people that live at the bottom of Mount Everest in the country of Nepal. They can be hired to help climbers navigate the rough terrain. Most have lived in the area their whole life. They risk their life because they can make money. People living in Nepal make less than $3000 for a whole year; it is one of the poorest countries in the world. A sherpa can easily earn $10,000 or more in just one climbing season which is only about 68 days.
In addition, they are very skilled climbers. That means people will hire them to help climb and show them the way and even to carry supplies for them. Sherpas are in excellent physical shape; the best in the world. The average load for a climber is 40 - 60 lbs. because they must pack all supplies needed during the climb: food, clothes, camping equipment, etc. Sherpas are also good at watching for changes in the weather that could signal trouble for climbers. Most agree that sherpas are the best guides to hire when trying to climb this gigantic mountain.
People climbing this mountain risk many dangers. A climber might be buried in snow, this is called an avalanche. They might fall into a crack in the ice, or struggle to breathe in thin air. Higher altitudes have less oxygen so walking only a few steps could make people gasp for air. Only a few people have climbed without the use of oxygen tanks because it is extremely difficult. Many climbers have fallen down the slippery mountain to their death. Also, a storm could sweep in with high winds and cause you to lose your way. Freezing to death would not take long in this climate. Some climbers who have died on the mountain are still there because it is too risky to bring their body down.
The cheapest estimates for climbing is around $35,000. This doesn't include your training expenses, travel expenses to get to Asia or the time you take off work. Climbers usually go with a team (never alone) and they use guides and oxygen because nobody wants to die. Most websites and former climbers will say the average cost is around $60,000. This amount can up or down depending on the company you hire to guide you. Some people will spend over $80,000 which is crazy.
The average climb takes about 2 months or 68 days. Climbers usually begin in late spring especially the month of May. This means they have to take off work for 8 - 10 weeks. This can also be expensive. There are many supplies and special gear needed when trying to climb a mountain of this size which is also very expensive.
The climbing permit or license that Nepal requires is $12,000 which is not refundable. The government of Nepal also requires a $4000 trash deposit. If you leave nothing behind after climbing, you get it back. Most take oxygen tanks to help them breathe. It takes 70% of a person's energy just to breath at this height so you wouldn't want to run out of oxygen.
The first to ever successfully climb Everest were Edmund Hillary from New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay a sherpa from Nepal . They successfully made the climb together in 1953.
The youngest climbers are Indian girl Malavath Purna and American boy Jordan Romero who both climbed at age 13. The oldest person to successfully climb was from Japan. His name is Yuichiro Miura and he was 80 years old.
Kami Rita, a sherpa from Nepal, holds the record for climbing Mt. Everest the most. He has climbed it 28 times.
