Ancient Greece was located on the continent of Europe. The land forms a peninsula which means it had water on three sides. Today, geographers call this area the Balkan Peninsula. The Agean Sea and the Mediterranean Sea were helpful for trade and travel. The climate was called a Mediterranean climate. This means it was pretty NICE and wasn't ever very cold. It stayed warm most of the year.
The land was covered with hills and mountains that separated the people and made farming difficult. As a result the people living in this spot focused on trade.
In spite of these mountains they still managed to grow wheat, barley, olives, and grapes.
Luckily, the mountains weren't very tall and provided fresh water such as streams and creeks running through them. The Greeks raised animals like goats, sheep, and lamb for food. One fun food fact is that the ancient Greeks did not eat beans. They thought beans and peanuts held the souls of the dead in them.
The Greeks lived in separate regions known as city-states. They called them a polis, but we will refer to them as city-states. Two famous city-states were named Athens and Sparta. All the city-states were fiercely loyal to their own people. They took pride in where they came from and devoted themselves to defending and honoring their city-state. The mountains did give them an advantage in defending their city-state. The mountains made it difficult for anyone to be sneaky and attack another city-state because they would see the enemy coming. This made the mountains an advantage for defending against invaders.
Since the land was not great for farming the Greeks focused on the water nearby. The sea or ocean was very important to their survival. They used the water to making a living in different ways. First, they became great sailors since it was easier to travel by sea. The Greeks became famous for building ships and boats. Second, the land the Greeks lived on formed a peninsula and this gave them great access to trade with each other and other civilizations. Third, the water also allowed them to fish for a living not just for fun.
The city-states had a strange relationship with each other. For example, they were friends and traded with each other, and even teamed up with each other to fight a common enemy. However, they would also go to war and fight against each other if necessary. It is similar to the relationship you might have with a sibling or cousin. You hang out, play games, and get along. However, sometimes you fight and wanna square up.
