Even in the ancient world people wanted to be fashionable of they could afford it. Aztec clothes & jewelry were different for the rich and poor people. Sometimes, your job influenced what you would wear too. Read about each group of people. On your study guide, place the facts with the correct group of people. Each group has 3 facts or bullets.
The king or ruler had the most beautiful clothes of all. He wore a long cloak. A cloak is similar to a long cape - think Superman but extra fancy. It was embroidered or decorated with many colors and tied in the front. No one could have a better cloak or cape than him or you could be put to death. He was the only one to wear the color turquoise. The color turquoise was used only for special ceremonies by the king. It represented fresh water to drink and was the most treasured gemstone. The king was often carried around on a platform that rested on the shoulders of many men. This was called a litter.
The upper class or rich wore clothes of cotton. It took a very long time to spin cotton into clothing, there were no machines like we have today. It was expensive but very soft to wear. They dyed their cotton clothing with berries, decorated them with feathers, or embroidered them if they could afford it. Decoration on clothing showed how rich people were. It was important to show others you could afford nice stuff. It was easy to spot rich or important Aztec people by just their clothing. However, their jewelry also made them stand out. Rich people obviously had more money for jewelry and could afford ones made of real gemstones or gold. The more they could afford, the more they wore. They also wore feathers as decoration. The feathers could be original or dyed in many colors. They would add them to jewelry, fans, and headbands.
Priests had a special coat they always wore over their other clothes. This coat was sleeveless and went to the knees. He also carried incense (something to burn). He carried this incense in a bag on his back much like our backpacks. The high priest also served as the official in a sacrifice ceremony. So he would also have a very sharp knife in that backpack.
A soldier in the military wore a special uniform for the group of warriors he belonged to. He had gemstones and special patches if he was a hero or especially brave. Warriors wore sandals made of leather since they traveled more than the average Aztec.
Poor people wore simple clothes made of tree leaves or plant fibers. They spun these into thread and wove them together. The poor could not afford cotton. No lower class person could wear feathers either (it was against the law) and very few could afford them either. Most poor people went barefoot since the weather was warm all year. Even the poor people wore some jewelry. They liked earrings, necklaces, and rings. Some had little bells hanging off them to make a jingling sound. Poor people made their jewelry with whatever they could afford, but it might not last very long.
