The Aztecs never invented the plow or used the wheel. However, they did invent a cool way of making more farmland. Their location left them with little land to use for farming. They came up with a convenient way to plant more food by making floating gardens.
They called this very unique method of farming - Chinampas. Chinampas were probably the most interesting form of farming any ancient civilization invented. Chinampas were small islands or rafts formed in lake water and swamp areas. Farmers made them by weaving sticks together to form a base. Then, they would pile on brush and mud to make little mounds or islands. This mud and brush helped them form a base sturdy enough to plant on. This was difficult and back breaking work but they became very good at it.
Most of their island gardens were about the size of a narrow football field and were held in place by wooden stakes or sticks from the willow tree. Some of them actually floated and could be moved like a floatie or a boat dock. The Aztec planted many crops on them like tomatoes, squash, and chili peppers. They left canals in between which allowed for small boats to travel through them. Today, some people in Mexico still use this method of farming (see video below right).
