Ancient Rome had a strong, organized military. It was one of the reasons the Roman empire became so big and powerful. Watch this short video before we read more about the Roman army or legion.
The ancient Roman army was divided into sections they called legions. Each legion was very organized and successful. Each legion had 5000 men. Each legion also had its own banner, number, leader, and nickname. The legion moved camp every night and the campsite was very colorful. It was also easy to find your group by looking for your banner or number.
A soldier's uniform included a shield, sword, a dagger, a metal jacket, helmet, and sandals. These items weighed almost 45lbs (20 kilograms) and he still had a backpack of other items he had to carry when not in battle. Soldiers were accompanied by trumpets and other noise makers. With all the noise, colorful banners, and marching soldiers you can understand why it was an impressive sight. Some enemies gave up without a fight because the legion's power was that famous.
Each soldier served for 25 years. If they lived, they could retire. They were given land and a pension (money) so they could live comfortably. It was very respectable to be retired from the legion or army. The land given to retired soldiers was located far away from the city of Rome. This placed loyal people away from the capital to help the empire if needed or let anyone know if they were being invaded.
