The Ganges is very special to the people in India. It is named after a Hindu goddess and is considered sacred. They believe it will purify their soul and wash away their sins. Therefore, they bathe in it regularly if they live nearby. People far away try to make a holy journey (called a pilgrimage) to wash in the sacred waters.

Bacteria and other water borne illnesses are found in the water. These cause sickness each year in India and even leads to death. Some estimate it kills over one million children each year. Nonetheless, the Hindu people in India keep the tradition alive since they think the Ganges is so special.
Even though the Ganges has become very polluted, the people believe the water will purify those who drink or bathe in its waters. Their holy journey to the Ganges River is usually near a city named Varanasi. A large gathering is held every 12 years for believers. This festival lasts three months and millions take part in it. Some may live near the Ganges and visit it each and every day. After death, Hindu followers have their body cremated or burned into ashes and dumped into this river.
