Feudalism describes how people lived during Medieval Times. Feudalism was based on loyalty. Each group was loyal to the group above. The feudal system kept people safe. People were interdependent. This means they relied on each other to survive. Unfortunately, there was little to no opportunity to change the group or level you were in for most people. Your life was already decided for you. However, this system kept order and brought peace of mind to some people after the chaos that had occurred during the fall of the Roman empire. There were many different kingdoms each with its' own king. The king gave land and smaller castles to his relatives. They were given the title of lords and ladies.
All people living on the manor had to be loyal to the king in their area. One way of showing loyalty was by paying taxes. Everyone had to pay taxes to their king. Each group had a special or specific job to do. It was how feudalism worked. Everyone had to do their part. In addition, everyone on the manor was required to attend church. Church was an important part of everyone's lives and they had to pray everyday. Christianity spread throughout all of Europe during this time and almost everyone belonged to the Catholic Church. Everyone looked forward to a holy day to be off work . A holy day was a religious holiday. Most people living on the manor never entered the castle because most were poor farmers. However, if the manor was under attack, the castle provided safety and protection.
The Lord owned the manor (land) and castle. He showed his loyalty to the king by paying taxes and keeping the manor nice. The castle was a sign of his wealth and he took pride in showing it off to others. He would often have his servants throw expensive and festive parties or dances to show off his castle. He was usually given his castle and land by a King for his great service as a knight or because he was related to the King. The taxes he paid to the king came from the large farm he ran on his land. The Lord had the final say over all matters and disagreements on his manor or land. Nobody could leave the manor without his permission.
The Lady was the Lord's wife and usually made sure things at the castle ran smoothly. She decorated the castle and supervised the servants working in it. She had few rights during this time but her husband (The Lord) usually trusted her opinion. He might even leave her in charge if he went off to battle with the Knights. Another important job of hers was to provide the Lord with children.
Knights were trained to protect the castle and were loyal to the Lord and his family. Knights started training as young as age 7 or 8 and were expected to be kind and brave. They went through different stages of training with and without weapons. They had a code of chivalry to follow and everyone respected them. They often traveled with the Lord to keep him safe. Protection of everyone on the manor was serious business and took lots of skill.
Peasants and serfs were the hardest workers and lived in small houses or huts outside the castle walls. They had the roughest life and often did not have many rights. When they were not working they were sleeping or praying. Religion was a big part of people's lives. They sang religious songs and went to church a lot. It was expected of everyone. Unfortunately, they did not get to go to school. Work was all they did ALL day.
Some had jobs like: cooking, cleaning, making clothes, building things etc. Many worked as servants in the castle. Servants working in the castle woke up much earlier than the Lord and his family. They were always working: cleaning, skinning or plucking animals, stirring pots, and stoking fires. Meals lasted for hours and often included many guests.
Serfs were almost like slaves. They were not bought and sold but they couldn't leave without permission from the Lord or Lady of the castle. A serf's job was whatever they were told to do. Most were farmers working the land around the castle. Serfs had to rent the place they lived in and pay taxes in grain to the Lord from crops they grew. They could "buy" their freedom but it rarely happened. They never had enough money. A serf's house was just one room where the whole family ate & slept. Serfs usually married at the age of 14 or 15 and few serfs lived past the age of 40. They only got a day of rest to attend church (called a holy day). This is where the word "holiday" comes from.
