The Inca empire started in a small village called Cuzco near the Andes Mountains in South America. Cuzco would become the center of the empire and a very important city. Another city, Machu Picchu was built in the mountains and you can take a virtual tour of what it looks like today by clicking the links below. Machu Picchu was built in the modern country of Peru and is about 500 years old. It was abandoned in 1572. Luckily, it was rediscovered by archaeologists in 1911 and is now a popular place for tourists to visit. Historians believe Machu Picchu was a vacation home for an emperor and this is where the story line from "Emperors New Groove" comes from. We will watch that movie before school is out.
