China is on the continent of Asia. In this region, the climate is mostly seasonal.
The ancient Chinese lived by two major rivers that provided fresh water and fertile soil. They both flowed east & emptied into the Yellow Sea.
The Huang He River was also called the Yellow River because it left behind yellow soil good for farming after it flooded. Many also lived near the Chang Jiang River. It was sometimes called the Yangtze River. The areas by both these two rivers was the best place to farm. Both of them provide silt (or fertile soil) for the land. This fertile soil is called loess in China.
The North China Plain was the best farmland in China. The North China Plain was in between these two rivers - it is shown on your map with a large X. This is where fertile soil called loess was deposited on the ground after a flood. Successful farming was very important to feed the people.
People also raised animals to eat but did this away from the rivers that flooded. They used an area they called the steppes. Steppe is another word for grassland. On the steppes or grass they raised animals like cows, sheep, and goats.
They also carved steps into hills or mountains. These were called a terrace. It made more farmland, was easier to water, and prevented erosion. This is called terrace farming. It is still used today in many parts of China to grow more crops.
Other areas of China: The western part of China is covered by deserts and mountains so it was not a popular place to live and it still isn't very crowded there today. These mountains and deserts created a wall of protection or safety for the Chinese people. Later, they added the Great Wall of China to keep people out.
Another area nobody wants to live is called the Plateau of Tibet. It is also located in the western part of China and is 15,000 feet above sea level. It is very cold at that altitude. A plateau is a raised area of level land.
