The Ancient Chinese were very smart and are known for many inventions that we still use today. We are going to read their inventions and rank them in the order of importance on our study guide.
BOX 1 - write GUN POWDER and PAPER in box 1.
Obviously, gun powder was a very important Chinese invention. It changed the way people fought wars. It forever changed the way in which armies battled each other. At first it was used to start fires, blind enemies, and provide a smoke screen. However, the Chinese and others soon learned how to make flaming arrows and rockets. Later, larger bombs were made.
The Chinese invented the first paper like we use today. It was much better quality than the papyrus paper the Egyptians wrote on. It was a complicated process without modern machines, but the Chinese did it. Since billions of people use it each and every day, we will rank it as a top invention too.
Other BOXES: read and rank Chinese inventions for the remaining boxes on your study guide. Each box should have 2 inventions but you could put more if you want. Box 2 should be important inventions, Box 3 not so much and Box 4 should be for inventions that are cool but did little to "change the world."
We can thank the ancient Chinese for making fireworks. They were tinkering with gun powder (another invention of theirs) and invented fireworks by accident. Today, China has some of the most beautiful and amazing fireworks displays in the world, especially to celebrate Chinese New Year. The Chinese can also be credited with making the first matches to create flame or fire.
They made the first seismograph. This is an instrument that detects earthquakes. Earthquakes can cause lots of destruction and kill people. The Chinese wanted to know right away if an earthquake occurred. Then they could send help and supplies immediately. Their seismograph had bronze objects inside a large container and they would drop out into the mouths of animals when an earthquake happened. Depending on which way the object dropped out, they had an idea of where the earthquake happened.
Finding your way thousands of years ago was a real pain. There were no smart phones or GPS to help people. Many probably got lost if going on a long journey. The Chinese helped with this problem by inventing the compass. A compass is a small, circular object that uses a magnetized needle. The Earth's magnetic field exerts force on this needle. This was very handy in helping people find their way.
Silk was another great Chinese invention. Many other countries wanted this beautiful and soft fabric that the Chinese mastered. The Chinese didn't share their secret of making it for many years, so it was a valued item to trade with others. The Chinese also made a better farming device than other civilizations. They took the plow and made it from cast iron. This made it easier to make lots of them at one time and helped with their food supply.
Our list of Chinese inventions could go on and on. They were super smart. Other items the Chinese are credited with inventing are: kung fu for training, ice cream (yum, yum), the umbrella, strirrups, saddle, kites, dominoes, wheelbarrow, jump ropes, the crossbow and acupunture.
