The Inca sometimes get a bad rap because they didn't invent the wheel. However, the Inca were very smart. First, they developed a calendar for a farming schedule and religious ceremonies. The calendar was divided into 12 months and each month was divided into 3 weeks. Each week had 10 days. They used a "time maker" on a special tower to mark the position of the sun to tell time.
They had an accurate system for keeping records and measuring things. Their number system used a base of ten. Quipus (kee-poos) were a series of strings they used. Each string had knots in it. The quipu allowed messages to be carried by Inca runners from one end of the empire to another.
The Incas also used a special farming method. They made terraces. A terrace is a ledge cut into a hill or mountain that gives a person extra land to farm. Terrace farming helped to feed the millions of people in the Inca Empire. This allowed them to grow crops on the steep mountain slopes.
The Inca also loved music. They invented many wind and percussion instruments. Drums and flutes were popular. The panpipe was the most popular. A panpipe is a group of single pipes tied together in a row. Each pipe in the row makes a different sound and the pipes are arranged by size. Panpipes are still played in the Andes Mountains today.
Finally, the Inca were good at building and engineering. In fact, they were master builders. Their transportation system was very impressive. Roads and suspension bridges allowed them to have fast communication between cities and villages. The roads also helped the military troops move faster. Inca roads stretched for more than 10,000 miles. One, the Royal Road, was 3,250 miles long. The roads belonged to the government though and could only be used with special permission. Their hanging bridges or suspension were also amazing. One Inca bridge was built in 1350 and lasted until 1890. Very few items built today last 500 years. The Inca used the fibers from a plant to weave the cable for bridges. The main cables were four to five feet thick and would be replaced every two years by Inca workers. These bridges helped with travel over water and in the mountains.
