Medieval

Medieval times came after the Roman Empire fell apart.  The Medieval time period was still in Europe but smaller kingdoms formed and spread out.  The word Medieval means "middle" in Latin which was the language spoke during the Roman Empire.  So sometimes it is called the Middle Ages because it was in the middle of the fall of Rome and the beginning of modern times.  Sometimes it is called the Dark Ages because it was a dark and dangerous place to live.  Life wasn't great during this time which lasted over 1000 years - from 476 until 1492.  It is known for castles and knights, jousting and the church.  It was a time when everyone knew their place and job and did what was expected or they died.  

Some famous fictional shows have this time as the setting.  Game of Thrones, Robin Hood, and Vikings took place during this time period.  This doesn't mean everything in those shows really happened.  They would be considered historical fiction which means the story is made up but true characteristics of a real time period are included.
