The Indus Valley civilization was located on the continent of Asia. Today this area is known as the countries of Pakistan and India.
Most people settled by the Indus River which is how this civilization got its' name. However, the Ganges River nearby was also a good place to settle so later people lived there too.
People lived here for access to water just like the other places we have studied. The rivers provided much needed water in a warm climate. The Indus River and the Ganges River both start in the Himalaya Mountains. The snow from the mountains feed the rivers with water. These mountains also separate India from the rest of Asia. The Himalaya includes Mt. Everest which is the tallest mountain in the world. The silt the river deposited after floods was richer than that of the Nile, Tigris, and Euphrates. That means the soil was even more fertile and farming was easier. In fact, they could grow TWO crops in one year. This is called double cropping. Today, many people in India believe the Ganges River is holy. In fact, millions travel to the Ganges River every year because they think the river will wash away their sins.
The people depended on seasonal winds to bring the rain they needed. These seasonal winds are called monsoons. For thousands of years, these winds have affected the climate of Asia and still do.
The winter monsoons come from the north & bring cold, dry air. The tall Himalaya Mountains blocked these winds from reaching this region so it stayed nice all year. The summer monsoons come from the south & bring warm, wet air. This rainy season was a much needed break from the hot climate. It is also good for crops.
Monsoons are still the single most important influence on climate in this area today.
Monsoons can be a blessing and a curse for the people here. The summer monsoons last 4 months (from June to September) and can bring as much as 80" of rain. Still, the rain is a welcome relief due to the blazing hot temperatures here. However, the rain can cause floods that kill their food crops. The flooding can also lead to dangerous mudslides.
