Journalism- Family Dynamics

Edited Photo

For this assignment we were assigned to take a photo that represents family dynamics with the pandemic of Covid-19 happening right now. This was actually a very hard assignment to do because I had no idea of what kind of photo I wanted to take. It was also very hard because my parents still have work everyday and my sister who I live with is quarantined at my moms and not home with me. I was going to take a photo of my parents when they got home from work but that didn't see interesting to me. So, when I was with my friend. We heard his brother screaming in his room from playing videos games so I got the idea of taking a photo of them playing video games together to help and show them bonding as a family (brothers). At first we had to get his brother to agree to do it and then I had to try tons of different positions and ways of taking the photo. I sat in the back so I could get their body in it and the tv, I tried capturing a photo of them laughing at each other. pointing at the tv and many more. After I looked through all the photos I decided to chose this one where they're leaning on one another and both focused on the video game. I thought the leaning gave off a good vibe of family and the concentration of bonding (both playing the game). Along with this pandemic we have had a lot more time to actually bond with our family and spend more time. We're not allowed to socialize in big groups so we have to come up with more ways to have fun and entertain ourselves even if that involves playing video games with our younger brother :)

After I decided the photo and put it into photoshop I decided to use the spot healing tool and get rid of the comforter on the bed because I was afraid it would be a distraction. After I did that it made one of their shirts longer and the door way longer so I had to crop it and make it look more normal and presentable. Once I did that I added the same filter "Poster Edges" to this photo but increased all of the settings and made it look really dignified and give off a cartoon vibe. I know most photos aren't really cartoonish but I really liked the way it looked like a cartoon or even that some sketched it (thinking of a video game).

Overall, I think this photo came out well. The only thing I don't like in the photo is the brightness in the left corner. I think it did that because I removed the bed sheet and that's why I couldn't fix it. I couldn't think of a different picture to take considering most of our parents are still at work so I think with limited sources I think this idea came out good and even with this pandemic there's still positive things that can happen like bonding and getting closer with your family!
