Jerry Wayne Crews was born in Salisbury, NC on a Sunday to Chris and Margaret Crews. He was a “baby boomer” being born less than seven years after the end of World War II. He lived most of his childhood at 418 Morlan Park Road in Salisbury. His sister, Peggy, was told by their parents that they were bringing her a special gift. Of course, she was expecting a toy, but instead, got a baby brother. She didn’t like him for quite some time. Peggy’s advice to all parents is don’t tell their older children they’re getting a “special gift” when they are getting a sibling. To a child’s mind: Special gift = toy.
Jerry attended Granite Quarry Elementary School for grades 1-8. From there he went to East Rowan High School, graduating in 1970. His junior and senior years he drove a school bus. Later, in 1982, he attended Rowan Technical College for eighteen months majoring in accounting. After high school, Jerry spent a little over a year serving in the full-time ministry of Jehovah’s Witnesses and working part time in the shoe business. Due to being a minister Jerry received a draft deferment for the Vietnam War. He met Diane Overcash around 1967 in Raleigh, NC at a convention. They were introduced by Jerry’s cousin who was dating Diane at the time. Four years later their friendship blossomed into romance, and they were married in 1971.
Beverly Diane Overcash was born in St. Petersburg, FL and spent most of her childhood in Kannapolis, NC. Jerry and Diane had five children together with Jeremy being born in Concord, NC and Jennifer born in Charlotte, NC. Justin, Jared, and Jon were born in Salisbury, NC. Jon was born with a ventricular septal defect that resulted in him staying in the ICU in Charlotte for a week when he was only two weeks old. He responded well to the medication and after ten months no longer needed treatment.
After living in Rowan County, East Spencer, Mooresville, and Salisbury, Jerry and Diane have spent most of their married life living on Rowan Street in Granite Quarry, NC. Diane has worked as a seamstress, waitress, and school bus driver. Jerry worked in textile, an iron foundry, management, and quality control. He retired in 2017. Among his many loves and passions are the New York Yankees, writing short fiction, a good southern breakfast, the movies “Dave” and “Silverado,” Diane and family. His short story “The Right Of Wrong” was published in the book The Best of Fiction On The Web – Volume 1: 1996-2017 collected by Charlie Fish.
