Peggy Ann Crews was born in Salisbury, NC on a Friday to Chris and Margaret Crews. She was a “baby boomer” being born less than three years after the end of World War II. She lived most of her childhood at 418 Morlan Park Road in Salisbury, a house built in 1944 by Margaret’s brother, Hubert Corriher. He had built the house for their mother, Bessie Hartman, but later built a smaller one for her between his house and Margaret’s. Bessie sold the larger house to Margaret and Chris.
The house Margaret and Chris owned had two bedrooms, a living room, a den, and a kitchen. The back porch was enclosed and had a bucket well inside the porch. From there the bucket was lowered into the well and water was drawn up. There was no bathroom, but there was an outhouse located about 200 feet from the back of the house. A coal stove provided heat for the winter months.
In the 1950’s a new well was drilled by Hubert on the east side of the house and indoor plumbing was installed. Margaret’s first cousin, Ronald Jones, built a bathroom out of a closet area at the back porch area adjacent to the den. He also installed a septic tank and drain field on the opposite side of the house from the newly dug well. Also, the heat for the house was converted from coal to fuel oil. Later in the 1960’s the Morlan Park area was annexed into the city of Salisbury and the house was connected to the city’s water and sewage. Later in the 1990’s Margaret installed central heating and air conditioning.
Peggy attended Granite Quarry Elementary School for grades 1-8. From there she went to East Rowan High School, graduating in 1966. After school, she was employed by J C Penny’s on South Main Street in Salisbury. She met Michael Roger Moore, Sr. through friendship with his sister. Mike Moore was born in Salisbury, NC. They were married in 1970 and had five children together, all born in Salisbury. In 1972, their daughter, Sabrina Dawn Moore, was born prematurely and died a few hours later. She was buried in Chestnut Hill Cemetery in Salisbury and later moved to Memorial Park Cemetery in Salisbury.
Peggy and Mike separated and divorced after their daughter Crystal was born. Due to Mike’s indifference, Peggy raised her children on her own. Times were hard living on one income, but she was relentless in working and giving her children a life. Her mother, Margaret, helped babysit the children after school until Peggy could get them after finishing work.
She started dating a neighbor, John Steven Pinyan, and they were married in 1989. They separated after two years, and she is now a widow.
Her oldest son, Michael Roger Moore, Jr, died in 2009 at the age of 38. Some of his ashes were placed at the grave of his sister, Sabrina, in Memorial Park Cemetery in Salisbury.
After many years working as a practical nurse (PN), Peggy retired in 2022. Among her many loves and passions are Cure Beach, the movie “Gone With the Wind,” reading books, playing solitaire, “The Walking Dead (most any Walking Dead series),” “General Hospital,” and her family.
