Austria sections motorways and expressways
System
Exit numbers are derived from km values, e.g. exit 20 on the A5
On old signs the word 'EXIT' appears instead of the symbol.
km signs are blue and normally appear every 500 m (or 200 m in some federal states).
There is an orange sign every 5 km (visible from the air)
Ramps have small signs every 200 m and at start and end. The exit number appears on the signs (9 in this case) and can thus also be seen from the access road.
In Vorarlberg, the road number appears on the km signs:
A1 Wien - Salzburg
Increasing from 9.0 at Wien-Auhof to 301 at the border with Germany in Salzburg (A8)
Sometimes the road number appears on the integer km value signs.
In exceptional cases 3 decimals appear on the signs.
A2 Wien - Villach - Italy
Sections:
1 Wien - Klagenfurt
Increasing from 0 at Knoten Vösendorf in Wien to 305.5 at exit Klagenfurt-Ost
On the A2 parking lots are sometimes indicated by their km value.
2 Klagenfurt bypass
Increasing from 314.3 at exit Klagenfurt-Ost to 305.5 at Knoten Krumpendorf west of Klagenfurt
Because the length of the motorway was not known when this section was built in the 1960s and 1970s, the km values do not match and there is a gap of about 10 km.
3 Klagenfurt - Italy
Increasing from 328 at Knoten Krumpendorf west of Klagenfurt to 380.8 at the border with Italy (A23)
4 Klagenfurt-West spur
Increasing from 0 at Klagenfurt-Wörthersee to 2.5 at Knoten Krumpendorf
This section used to be the A2 until the Klagenfurt bypass opened in 1996.
A3 Guntramsdorf - Wulkaprodersdorf
Sections:
1 Ramp 2 in Knoten Guntramsdorf
Increasing from 0 at the beginning of the exit ramp from the A2 to 0.94
Though there is no clear transition between the ramp off the A2 and the main carriageway, after 940 m there is a double km sign indicating the end of the ramp and the start of the main cariwagway. This may be the point where an off ramp coming from the south was originally planned to meet the existing ramp but no concrete such plan is known.
2 Guntramsdorf - Pottendorf
Increasing from 0.0 at Knoten Guntramsdorf to 17.35 at the border between Lower Austria and Burgenland
3 Pottendorf - Eisenstadt
Increasing from 25.9 at the border between Lower Austria and Burgenland to 37 at Knoten Eisenstadt (S31)
Originally the A3 was planned to start at the S1 in Wien. In Burgenland the km values are still based on this planning while Lower Austria uses the start point 0 at Knoten Guntramsdorf.
4 Eisenstadt - Wulkaprodersdorf
Increasing from 0 at Knoten Eisenstadt (S31) to 3.1 south of Wulkaprodersdorf
A4 Wien - Hungary
