I first found this recipe in Mom's recipe box. The index card just listed the ingredients, no instructions at all. I remember Mom saying this was a good recipe, but I don't remember her making it much. Going through her notebook of recipes last summer, I found the more complete instructions, along with a notation that this recipe originally came from her Better Homes & Gardens cookbook.
INGREDIENTS
1/4 c butter - melted in 8" pan
4 c diced apples

Spread evenly with the diced apples.
Mix the white sugar, salt and cinnamon (or nutmeg) together. Sprinkle the mixture over the apples, then sprinkle with the nuts..
Thoroughly mix the graham cracker crumbs and brown sugar. Moisten with the cream or evaporated milk, then spread over all.
Bake for 30 minutes.
Serve hot or cold, plain or with whipped cream.
Serves 8.
Although my guesses as to how to assemble this apple dessert were close to the mark, I'm so happy to have found the full recipe!
