Whether making baking powder biscuits for "real" strawberry shortcake or to accompany chicken soup, this is the baking powder biscuit recipe to use! I'd made the Fanny Farmer recipe for years, but then my daughter showed me her Grandma Whiting's recipe and I've been hooked ever since. Liz started helping Grandma make biscuits at the young age of 2 or 3 years old and today Liz is a great baker!
INGREDIENTS
2 c flour
4 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 c shortening
3/4 c milk
Preheat oven to 450°.
Sift the dry ingredients together into a mixing bowl.
Cut in the shortening. (I use a pastry blender, but I'm guessing Grandma taught Liz to mix it in with her fingers.)
Add the milk.
Mix in just enough for it to stick together.
Put the dough onto a floured surface and flatten dough so it is 3/4" thick.
Cut with a biscuit cutter.
Bake on an ungreased cookie sheet for 10-12 minutes
Makes approximately 20 biscuits (1 3/4"). Liz notes that Grandma often doubles this recipe.
