Best served with homemade whipped cream! Do not accept imitations!
INGREDIENTS
1 c Crisco shortening
1 c sugar
2 eggs
1 1/2 c molasses
2 c sour milk
4 1/2 c flour
2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
4 tsp spices (ginger & cinnamon)
Whipped Cream
2 c heavy or whipping cream
2 - 4 Tbsp sugar, to taste
1 tsp vanilla extract
Preheat oven to 325° and grease and flour a 9" x 13" pan or two square pans.
Cream the shortening and sugar.
Beat in the eggs, mixing thoroughly.
Blend in the molasses and sour milk.
Stir the dry ingredients together, then stir into the liquid ingredients.
Pour into the prepared pan and bake for 45-55+ minutes until it tests done.
When done, cut into squares and serve piping hot with freshly whipped cream.
To make the whipped cream...
Beat the whipped cream until soft peaks form, adding the sugar and vanilla any time after starting to beat. You can use an electric mixer or an egg beater or a wire whip.
Be careful not to over whip, or it will turn buttery and you'll have to throw it out!
Whipped cream can be made beforehand and kept in the refrigerator (If it starts separating, just whip it a little again and it will be fine.)
