Crafting and Gathering Skills for Players

This page lists various skills that the players can acquire and improve, that allow them to gather raw materials, or craft them into useable items.

All of these skills are non-weapon proficiencies. Learning level 1 costs like a non-weapon proficiency, either a NWP slot and/or character improvement points.

Alchemy is the process of combining herbs and other items into potions and such. It requires either a devotion to the art, or levels in magic-user or cleric (or their subclasses). This can be learned in any major city in all the known lands.

Armorer is the skill of making armor, from padded to full plate, and in some cases, repairing such items. This is split off from Blacksmithing, and has specializations built into it.

Blacksmithing is making large metallic items, requiring a forge, anvil and selection of hammers, and also smelting and gathering of ores.

Carpentry is the selecting and working of wood to make large items like looms, spinning wheels, and musical instruments, and non-combat versions of arrows and such.

Spell Selling is when a spell casting character sells spells for cash, typically in a large city. Selling a spell or two, or giving them away, does not apply to the needed fees and taxes noted in the description. Priests and druids who cast spells for their temple and receive donations do not pay such fees (though temples do pay a significant tax to the government in both cash and services, depending on the exact temple).

Stoneworking includes making magical gems and stone items.

Tailoring is for making clothing items, storage items, and the like.

Weaponsmaker is the skill of making all types of weapons, from arrows to swords and everything in between. This skill has a number of specializations built into it.

Woodcutters find, fell, and cut into boards those woods most useful in the crafting of magical items.

Learning These Skills

These skills can be bought with character improvement points, assuming of course you can find a teacher.

If buying these skills with NWP slots, they cost the current number of NWP slots you have, maximum 5, unless it is a NWP that normally costs two slots, in which case it costs double (maximum 10).

Note that some skills can have 'levels' of skill, where you would learn 'alchemy (2)', for instance. In such a case, the cost for levels are always 1 slot, up to a maximum of 5.
