Note the exact numbers can vary somewhat, especially from one region to another.
The Polemarchos commands the entire army of the county, about 140,000 soldiers
A Starategos commands about 8000 soldiers, each referred to as an Agyrspides. Each city has two or three, with the rest being on patrol or encamped in subdivided groups on the border. There are eighteen in the country.
A Taxiarhos commands about 3000 soldiers, a Phalanx. One in three or four is elite mounted knights, the Agema.
A Syntagmatarkhis commands about 1000 soldiers, an Ekdramoi.
A Tagmatarkhis commands about 200 soldiers, a Gymnatoi.
A Lokhagos commands about 50 soldiers, a Lochos.
An individual soldier is a Hoplite.
Groups are referred to like this: City name, Agyrspides (number in that city), Phalanx or Agema (number in that agyspides), Ekdramoi (number in that phalanx or agema), gymantoi (number in that ekdramoi), Lochos (number in that gymnatoi), though most soldiers will not bother beyond their Phalanx designation, so they might say they serve with the 'Dacia Agyrspides II, first phalanx'. A phalanx with a particularly famous, successful or beloved commander might have his name added to the reference instead.
