Paul B. Madden — Iota Theta 201

Paul Brooks Madden Jr., 68, Iota Theta Zeta No. 201, passed away peacefully at Emerson Hospital near his home at Acton, Mass., on Thursday, April 10, 2014.His wife and children were with him. Paul was a most loving husband and father. He grew up in Arkansas, the only child of Brooks and Nina Madden. Nina is still living in Texarkana, Ark., at the age of 91.Paul graduated from Arkansas State University in 1967 with the first class receiving diplomas under the university name. During his senior year he was High Alpha of Iota Theta.He earned a Ph.D. in physics at Florida State University in 1976. Later he worked as a staff computer scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, as principal engineer at Digital Equipment Corp. and engineering manager at Apollo Computer in Chelmsford, Mass.While at Apollo, he met his future wife, Joy Curtis.After Apollo he held executive and senior engineering positions at several local technology companies, including Avid, Sea Change and, most recently, Synacor. He was widely respected as a hands-on manager and accomplished software architect and engineer.He was also a devoted practitioner of old-time fiddle music and for many years was a moderator on fiddlehangout.com.He leaves his wife, Joy; a son, Brooks; a daughter, Ivy; his mother, Nina Madden; an aunt, Julia Cary; an uncle, Oland Goad; and beloved cousins, John Cary, Rebecca Jones and Russell Goad, and their families. He also leaves his mother-in-law, Louise Curtis, and a large family on his wife’s side.Memorial gifts may be sent to First Parish in Concord, Mass., or First Presbyterian in Texarkana, Ark. A private burial service is being planned for the near future.
