Donald Konold — Iota Theta 131

Dr. Donald Konold, 89, professor emeritus of history at Arkansas State University, died Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, from prostate cancer. He was initiated as Zeta No. 131 and served as faculty adviser of Iota Theta for many years.

He was born at Dexter, Kan., in 1924.

He attended Texas A&M until he joined the war effort in World War II. He was stationed in France, where he met his future wife of 59 years, Flore Dupuis.

Upon his return to the United States, he earned his bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D. degrees in history from the University of Missouri. He came to ASU in 1954 as a professor of history. In his 39 years of service at ASU he also served as History Department chairman, acting dean of the College of Liberal Arts and acting vice president of academic affairs.

He was the author of many books and articles on American medical ethics and biographies. He was an avid gardener and golfer. In his later years he could be seen getting his exercise walking miles along Jonesboro streets.

Dr. Konold was preceded in death by his wife, Flore Dupuis Konold, on Feb. 11, 2005.

He was survived by his brother, Richard Konold; a son, Danny Konold; three daughters, Alma Susan Mancabelli, Laurie Gee and Rose Konold Woelk; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

An informal memorial service was held Wednesday, Sept. 25, at Emerson Funeral Home in Jonesboro.
