Denne delen inneholder ekstramateriale som understøtter innføringen i grunnbegreper og problemstillinger i analysen av internasjonale relasjoner.
Noen av dem er helt generelle for samfunnsvitenskapen, som hva en aktør og en struktur er for noe. Du skal forstå hovedforskjellene mellom individuelle og kollektive aktører og hvordan såkalte strukturelle føringer påvirker hvordan de handler.
Andre begreper er mer spesifikke for faget, som internasjonal, i motsetning til transnasjonal eller overnasjonal. De to siste viser til hvordan verden endrer seg gjennom globaliseringsprosessene. Vi legger også vekt på statsbegrepet og hva det vil si at stater er suverene, og hvilke implikasjoner det får for strukturen i det internasjonale systemet.
Endelig beveger vi oss inn på de vanskelige vitenskapsteoretiske og -filosofiske utfordringene som oppstår når samfunn og internasjonale forhold skal analyseres vitenskapelig. Å fange en «virkelighet» til fulle i tradisjonell forstand er en umulighet.
