The Recorder System by Danny Sprung

The Recorder System is a mechanism to help with dealing complaints arising from Conduct and or Ethical Violations at ACBL tournaments.

If you or your partner feel there is an incident that needs consideration, a Player Memo should be completed.  They may be found at ACBL.org, or you can ask the director for one.

Some of the incidents that should be brought to the recorders attention include:

·      Poor Behavior

·      Unethical Bridge Actions

·      Public Accusations of Cheating

When a Memo is filed, it goes to the recorder, who will discuss the matter with all parties involved, and determine the facts as best as they can.  If further action is required, the recorder can refer the player to the appropriate authority.  If no further action is required at that time, the Memo will be recorded, and possibly used to determine patterns of behavior, should multiple incidents and Memos be filed against the same partner and or pair.

This is an important system to help keep the game we love great.  Please do not think ‘nothing ever happens’ when a Memo is filed, that is not the case. This year I have received a number of recorder forms.  I personally spoke with all parties involved and one case was referred to our Unit Disciplinary Chair who convened a conduct committee.
