Located along two rivers, the Clark Fork and the Bitterroot Rivers, and at the intersection of five mountain ranges, Missoula is the second largest city in Montana. As of the 2010 census, 66,788 people live in the city and 109,299 in the greater metropolitan area. Known for its active outdoor life style, Missoula and its surroundings have 400 acres of parkland, 22 miles of walking/biking trails, nearly 5000 acres of open space conservation areas, and of course, SURFING in Downtown Missoula. For those more interested in indoor activities, it also hosts Montana’s largest and oldest active brewery. Notable natives of Missoula have included Jeannette Rankin, the first woman in Congress (elected twice in 1916 & 1940) and Mike Mansfield, the longest serving Senate Majority leader (1961-1977). Missoula is also the setting for the movie “A River Runs Through It,” although the movie was actually filmed elsewhere.
