Partnership Fun at the Bridge Table

Bruce Gwaltney, Tournament Chair, shared this story:

Filling in at the last minute as a partner for a delightful gentleman provided an interesting bidding misunderstanding.  Left hand opponent opens one spade.  Partner over calls two clubs followed by a pass to me.  With five clubs, some values, and a void in spades, I’m thinking game or even a slam in clubs.  I’m not sure if my partner plays splinters so I settle on cue bidding two spades intended as a limit raise or better in clubs.  Three passes later, I’m playing two spades.  Partner tables a 19 count with four spades to the QJ which is good.  When the dust settled we made our two spades, primarily on high cards.  The hand record said the opponents had six spades (we had six clubs)!
