Researchers of the early Clay families who lived in the county of Yorkshire are extremely fortunate in having so many remarkable archives available to them thanks to two distinguished historians, John William Clay and his son Charles Travis Clay who both independently transcribed and edited numerous ancient documents, charters and deeds for that particular county which are an invaluable source of information for family historians. This particular branch of Clay's were from Rastrick near Halifax in the county of Yorkshire and John William Clay was born there in 1838 and was a keen historian, antiquarian and genealogist, he married Alice Caroline Pilleau. He was the mayor of Brighouse in Yorkshire from 1898 to 1901 and was also a Justice of Peace.  He was a director of his fathers firm J. T. Clay and Sons who were mill owners and producers of wosted cloth but he still made time to pursue his interest of history and the result of his work in transcribing has left today's historians much to thank him for, he died in 1918.

John William Clay

His son Charles Travis Clay was born in 1885 at Rastrick House, he married Violet Robson and he was inspired by his father on the subject of history and produced a similar amount of transcripts relating to the history and genealogy of Yorkshire and had many books published. He was a member of various historical societies and was the librarian at the House of Lords in London for 34 years until he retired in 1956. He was knighted the following year to become Sir Charles Travis Clay, he passed away in 1978.
